CHAPTER 11
- Matiu -
Matiu drums his fingers on the steering wheel, the red lights on the empty intersection looking back at him like the eyes of so many nocturnal beasts. Through the speakers, Penny cuts the conversation with their mother short, and her footsteps become muffled as the phone disappears back into her pocket, or her purse, or wherever. Other voices, Craig Tong maybe, or the wait staff. Matiu picks up words here and there but nothing of interest. Enough to know Penny is safe for the moment, but what the hell was that about seeing someone in the elevator? Thatâd sent a shiver through him, sparking images of so much of his life, seeing someone over his shoulder, in his periphery, but never there. Can Makere talk to her? He isnât sure how that works. Maybe you really have to believe in him for him to be able to whisper in your ear. No-one else believes in Makere, but if thereâs anyone who might, given enough proof, itâll be Penny.
The lights change, and Matiu pulls away. It had been easy enough to tap into her phone and slip the microphone malware into her background settings while she was in the shower. Heâs only doing it for her own good, so he can keep an ear out for her when he isnât around. Bloody glad heâd done it too, since sheâd then ditched him. Luckily he knows people who could drop things off for him, or it wouldâve taken him half the night to get those samples to Cordell. Probably some issues around chain of evidence, handing them off to Young Shiv to deliver, but Penny shouldâve thought about that before agreeing to have dinner with Craig Tong. Now, through his phone, he can listen in on anything that might happen around her and locate her if he has to. She might wonder why her batteryâs running down faster than usual, thatâs all. In any case, heâs cruising around the block, stalker-style, watching the other cars on the street, the people walking the waterfront. Nothing creepy about that at all. But if Makere turns up for Penny, he doubts Craig Tong is going to be the right guy to keep her safe. And Dad will kill Matiu if he lets anything bad happen to their little girl.
To his left, the historic ferry building is dwarfed by the Apirana Ngata Convention Centre that dominates the Captain Cook Wharf, a leviathan of sweeping glass and chrome, meant to portray wind and waves against the sky, but really just suggesting that the builders couldnât find their spirit levels that day. Even in these days of state-mandated power conservation, someone has managed to get sign-off to leave the funky architectural lights running on this visual monstrosity. More than once, Matiu had wondered what his chances would be of driving up those curving steel waves fast enough to get airborne. Oh, the things he wouldâve done if he was younger, dumber.
His phone rings, muting Pennyâs feed.
